Monday Apr 27, 2026
A deep dive conversation based on the moviescramble.co.uk review written by Mary Munoz.
Young Rebecca, together with her father, relocates from the UK to Jerusalem seeking a fresh start following the tragic death of her mother. Their old family home in the Valley of the Ghosts becomes the setting for mysterious events and an unlikely friendship between Rebecca and Rasha, a young Palestinian girl whom only she can see. Could it be that the walls of the house are infused with the history and emotions of past generations, or is Rasha simply a figment of Rebecca's imagination? As Rebecca delves deeper into the secrets of the house, she discovers Rasha's true identity and the shared grief that binds them. This poignant tale explores memory, trauma, and the longing for home amidst the complexities of relations between Israel and Palestine. A House in Jerusalem is a 2023 Palestinian fantasy thriller film directed by Muayad Alayan. It premiered in February 2023 at the Rotterdam International Film Festival. The film tells the story of a Jewish-British girl, Rebecca, and her father, who move to Israel into a West Jerusalem home, where she encounters the ghost of a Palestinian girl named Rasha whom only she can see. Rasha's family was expelled from that home during the 1948 Palestine war, known as the Nakba. Eventually, Rebecca makes a visit to Bethlehem's Aida Camp in the Israeli-occupied West Bank to repay a past debt after her father had thrown out Rasha's doll, and in search of the house's historical owners. The film's screenplay was written by Muayad and Rami Musa Alayan, two Palestinian brothers.

Moviescramble - The Neural Cut Ep 36: Barbie
Saturday Apr 25, 2026
Saturday Apr 25, 2026
A deep dive conversation based on the moviescramble.co.uk review written by Mary Munoz.
Barbie the Doll lives in bliss in the matriarchal society of Barbieland feeling good about her role in the world in the various iterations of Barbies over the years showing girls that play with her that they can be whatever and whoever they want. On the flip side, Ken, who also lives in Barbieland, is unnoticed except in relation to Barbie, which is however, one step above any other doll in Barbieland, such as Allan. One day, Stereotypical Barbie begins to have feelings that she's never experienced, which leads to her world seemingly falling apart. Weird Barbie determines that there is something happening in the real world with someone playing with her being unhappy, leading to Stereotypical Barbie reluctantly heading to the real world to rectify what is happening with that person, she first needing to find this person. Much to Barbie's chagrin, the original Ken, Beach Ken, tags along with her to the real world in he needing to survive in her presence. Beyond their mission to find this person, Barbie and Ken will find the real world unlike anything they know in Barbieland, especially in it being a male-dominated society. While Barbie still has to find out what's going on that made her come to the real world, Ken is finding a newfound control, which he wants to bring back to Barbieland. If he can do so, the role of Barbie in the real world may be forever changed. On top of everything, executives at Mattel, primarily white men, discover that a "real life" Barbie and Ken doll have infiltrated the real world, their mission to capture the pair, but especially Barbie, to put them/her back in their/her place, namely in a manufacturer's sealed box. Barbie is a 2023 fantasy comedy film directed by Greta Gerwig from a screenplay she wrote with Noah Baumbach. Based on the fashion dolls by Mattel, it is the first live-action Barbie film after numerous animated films and specials. Starring Margot Robbie as the title character and Ryan Gosling as Ken, the film follows them on a journey of self-discovery through Barbieland and the real world following an existential crisis. The supporting cast includes America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell.
